Disaster Response

In the Karonga area in northern Malawi, when earthquakes hit in December, 2009, the ELCM was one of the first responders with items like tents, food, mosquito nets, and chlorine for safe water. As the growing season was disrupted, the ELCM provided emergency food aid as well. Many of the church buildings were damaged and the ELCM is assisting with some funding for repairs and building supplies. With climate change affecting Africa adversely, traditional weather patterns have been disrupted. Malawi has seen its share of flooding, drought, and destructive storms. The ELCM finds a way to help alleviate people’s suffering.
