Ten Ways: Financial Assistance for Students
Education is a gift and absolutely necessary for the development of a nation.
Prayer Petition - Financial Assistance for Students:
God of all knowledge, we lift up to you today the ministry of Financial Assistance for students of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi, making it possible for Malawi to raise up future leaders in your church, in your schools and in your communities. Bless the students who receive this assistance, who otherwise would never be exposed to such an education, that their studies may in return bless them, their families and their communities. Amen.
Financial Assistance for Students
In the past ten years, bursary (school) fees have been paid for more than 10,000 students! Just as the ELCM cares for children at the feeding centers they also look after orphans’ education. Bursaries are given to students attending secondary school. Primary school is free to students but tuition must be paid when you reach secondary school. The process for a student to receive a bursary goes like this. A parish pastor receives applications from students. The pastor makes sure the student is in need of a scholarship and then gives a recommendation to the ELCM head office along with the application. The Office of Bursary looks at all the names that have been submitted and at the funding they have to support the fees. As many students as possible are sent to school. Funds are sent directly to the school. A follow-up visit is made to see how the student is doing. The ELCM also operates 13 primary and secondary schools throughout the country. The government provides the teachers and curriculum while the ELCM provides a school block and teacher’s housing.
