Prayer Petition - HIV/AIDS Support:

God of mercy, we lift up to you today the ministry of HIV/AIDS support of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi. We acknowledge that this disease has physically and emotionally crippled those who come in contact with it. We ask that you encourage, educate and support those who are both affected and infected by HIV so that they may be aware of your love, support and mercy extended to them and all with whom they come in contact. Amen.

HIV/AIDS Support

With the limited resources it has, the ELCM is targeting HIV/AIDS and opportunistic diseases like malaria. The Diakonia Department was described by Mphatso Thole as the “mother of all developmental departments.” In other words, the work of HIV/AIDS Support is carried out through all the departments of the ELCM. The primary work is to sensitize the general public about the danger of HIV/AIDS and to reduce stigma about people living positively with HIV/AIDS. For instance, at a feeding center, the church knows that many of the children might be infected with the virus and that their parents may have died from HIV/AIDS but staff won’t point a finger at a child and identify him or her as an AIDS orphan. The church’s role is to make sure that the children have enough to eat. This attitude permeates the entire church. Volunteers at the feeding center receive HIV/AIDS training and understand that there is zero tolerance for discrimination. Nutritious food will help children and adults infected with the virus to lead a higher quality life. Support groups are also assisted by the Diakonia Department which provides education, food, and training for income-generating projects like the peanut butter grinders.
