Prayer Petition - Literacy Training for Women:
God of all learning, we lift up to you today the ministry of Literacy Training for Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi. We acknowledge that women around the world lag far behind men in literacy. We also know that when women are educated, their children tend to get educated as well. Bless this important ministry which helps not only to teach women to read, but also equips them with simple business skills which can then help a women support herself, her children, and her community. Amen.
Literacy Training for Women
It is well known that when you educate a woman, you also educate her children as well as the whole nation. Literacy rates for women fall far behind the same rate for men in Malawi with women representing two-thirds of the adults who cannot read or write. The ELCM has a strong belief in gender balance and helping women to achieve a better life. The first step is literacy training for women. Through this training, which trickles down to girls also achieving an education, economic issues of poverty can be adressed. Simple math training helps women develop successful income-generating projects that provide income to their families and enable children to continue in school.
