Mosquito Nets

A mosquito net is a life-giving gift. In Malawi, the anopheles mosquito carries the malaria parasite. This mosquito is nocturnal, so protecting people while they are sleeping under a net is a good way to prevent being bitten by the mosquito. Often several children will sleep together under a net. The nets have been distributed to the children at the feeding centers and a pilot program distributed nets to pregnant women, who along with their unborn child are also very vulnerable to the effects of malaria. Sometimes people don’t like to sleep under the nets, claiming they are too hot during the summer. Some cultural beliefs and myths about mosquito nets say that they are not good for issues of family planning or childbearing. The church has a malaria education program to help dispel these myths and give accurate instruction about the benefits of sleeping under a net to help persuade people why they should.

The Northwest Synod of Wisconsin and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi are part of a pilot program for the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Watch for more information coming your way on how you can participate in this effort.
