Prayer Petition - Clean Water:

God of purity, we lift up to you today the ministry of Clean Water of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi. We acknowledge that we take for granted that our water is pure and free from disease. Bless those in Malawi who carry the water from such long distances, bless those who build wells making water more accessible and bless those who take the time to purify their water so that it can then nourish the bodies of those who consume it. Amen.

Clean Water

Good health begins with clean, safe water. Many communities in Malawi do not have adequate access to water, prompting women and girls to spend a lot of time hauling water on their heads for cooking and cleaning purposes. Culturally, many of the household jobs fall to women to accomplish. If there is no village well, women and girls spend a great deal of time walking long distances to bring water back to the household. Often the nearest water source might be a river. If the water from the river is not treated, the household is exposed to all manner of bacteria and parasites. Crocodiles also inhabit many of these rivers and are a danger. Animals also use the river water making an unclean environment.

Wells can be hand-dug, drilled, or bored. In a hand-dug well, a cement casing is lowered into place and a cement cap put on top to protect the well. A pump completes the well. Sometimes there isn’t enough money to protect the well or provide the pump. This can create a safety hazard for children and animals (as well as adults!).
